ABOUT THE EXHIBITION

‘Sunder’; To divide, separate and sever.

In this series I explore trauma through an ornamental, internal and cyclical perspective. Using an introspective method of storytelling by treating the material of the work as a conduit for how narratives travel through us, and in turn shapes our surroundings.

The scarification on the works surface protrudes from within, the punctured surface fractures and breaks away, revealing a metallic, silver tear like structure. Here, the sight of trauma is rendered as decorative, ornamental and precious. The beads of silver swirl in a circular pattern, referencing the ephemeral cycles of the natural world and act as a reminder of our fleeting moments in life. It is through this internal protrusion that trauma is presented as both a metaphorical representation and a physical depiction of scarification. I use abstraction to process and transform trauma, a surface language of memory. I work in conversation with the materials, allowing texture and decay to lead form. Opening a dialogue on how the physicality of different materials can speak to memory and felt qualities like trauma. Furthermore, the implementation of sediment within the work references the physicality of the natural word. Connecting ideas of place and material specificity, exploring how time and location shape their form and meaning.
