Michael Taylor’s paintings begin with recognition but rarely end there.

Figures, objects and fragments of landscape emerge just clearly enough to be named before slipping into something less certain. A portrait becomes a character. A wedge of fruit becomes a narrative device. A shadow becomes a passage through the picture. Meaning remains possible, but never fixed.

Underlying these works is an interest in things that hide in plain sight. Not hidden things, but familiar things encountered differently. A face, a gesture, a plant, a piece of fruit. Rather than transforming the ordinary into something extraordinary, the paintings linger in the moment where recognition gives way to reconsideration.

Across portraits, grouped figures and still-life constructions, unlikely relationships emerge between forms. Figures fold into one another, objects appear both connected and independent, while spaces flatten, expand and overlap. Nothing assumes complete authority. Objects, figures, gestures and absences carry equal weight, inviting the eye to wander rather than settle.

Narrative hovers at the edge of the image without ever fully arriving. Titles offer clues but rarely explanations. They introduce possibilities rather than conclusions. Stories remain open, assembled afterwards by the viewer.

Humour, tenderness and ambiguity coexist throughout. Characters appear awkward, theatrical, melancholic or quietly defiant, yet never reducible to a single reading. They seem caught between becoming and being, between self-possession and uncertainty.

Throughout the work, concealment is as important as revelation. Forms emerge, dissolve and reappear. Shadows do not simply describe space but guide movement through it. Looking becomes a process of navigation rather than observation.

These paintings do not seek to resolve meaning. They create the conditions in which meaning might emerge. Recognition becomes the beginning of a conversation rather than its conclusion.
