Robbie Flowers

Water is the driving force of my artistic practice: both as subject and metaphor.

It reflects the beauty and chaos of my life, and to me, it represents the purest form of abstraction. Diving into water is more than a physical act; it is a baptism, a portal, a crossing between worlds. Each immersion offers new possibilities and fresh inspiration.

As a lifelong swimmer, water has always been my anchor. From a childhood spent roaming the wild beaches of the Mid North Coast, to teenage years tracing black lines across swimming pools, to now where swims in Sydney Harbour form a daily ritual.

My work is a meditation on the interaction between light and movement. The play of reflections on the water’s surface, and the way light dances across the ocean floor, combine to reveal an uncanny underwater landscape. These shifting patterns, shimmering, fluid, and ephemeral, are central to my oil painting, inviting the viewer into a world that is both familiar and abstract.

Flowers’ window display will be on view from 30 June – 12 July.

Opening drinks Saturday, 5th July, 2 – 4 pm. RSVP to gallery@mcontemp.com
