ABOUT THE EXHIBITION

In Polka, Suzanna Vangelov explores the delicate intersections of childhood memory, innocence, and personal transformation. Drawing inspiration from the game of dominos, this new body of work examines how individual moments—like falling tiles—can trigger profound change. Each element in the work serves as a metaphor for the ripple effects of choice, chance, and connection.

The title Polka evokes the rhythm and repetition of early life: playful, patterned, and at times unpredictable. For Vangelov, games like dominos are more than just diversions—they are formative experiences that quietly introduce the rules of cause and effect. This series revisits those early impressions, balancing a sense of wonder with the deeper realisation that innocence is impermanent and ever-evolving.

With a restrained yet expressive visual language—marked by dots, lines, and layered textures—Polka navigates the space between control and surrender. The works capture the quiet tension of a domino just before it falls, echoing life’s pivotal moments of stillness before transformation. Vangelov invites viewers to trace their own narratives through this visual terrain, reflecting on the chain reactions that shape identity and experience.

As part of her solo exhibition, Vangelov will lead a cutting workshop that offers a unique opportunity to engage with her practice firsthand – the processes of deconstruction and reconstruction. Due to a last-minute cancellation, one final spot has become available — secure it now via the link.
