RICK CARLINO | I LOVE YOU, YOU’RE PERFECT. NOW CHANGE!
Lady Resina is the love of my life but she teases and tries to F#@! me over!
The moment I think I have harnessed her power she spills, breaks her tension, eats mosquitos or hardens without warning. I’m in constant conversation with her ensuring each layer behaves specifically as I’ve envisioned keeping calm the notoriously rebellious medium. I have no desire to see a flawless factory finish but I do strive to master the uncontrollable by bringing a new effect to life or evolve techniques to find something new and expressive. Its hand-made. It’s not perfect.
Resina adds layers of complexity and depth by deciding how the work ends. Over time her pigment can mature, deepen or bloom to the point of settling within the room she hangs. And this is meant to happen… Its the nature of the medium.
Mr. Burrs, my art teacher said, “Art is a tangible expression of human emotion.” And this has always been my guiding principle. Being someone who is wholly led by my mood, I harness those feels before commencing a new body of work. I’m driven by music always and visually inspired by textiles, glass, architecture and the many moments that occur in life. I love developing themes and narratives and use it as an anchor and focus for exhibitions and shows. Colour is king and by using various pigment types, I create translucent and opaque layers to make a work that captures my moment… from playful, graphic and rigid, dark, stupidly bright, soft and subtle or organic and chaotic.
I was born in Sydney Australia from Italian parents. I have 3 older brothers and 200 niblings. My family and friends are my world. I can speak the Calabrese dialect only which sounds wild to most people… because its crazy. I spent years in marketing across many different disciplines finishing in the branding space which I liked most. I’m a self taught artist and met Lady Resina over 12 years ago. I studied music and one day I’ll be a visual artist who writes a broadway musical…
