Maria Jose Benvenuto Solo Show ‘Rhythms of Nature’ 2023

Exhibition ends June 17th

In late 2018, Chilean Artist, Maria Jose Benvenuto, swapped her home city of Santiago, situated in a valley surrounded by mountain ranges, for the scrubby bush lands and oceanic horizons of Sydney’s Northern Beaches. For an artist whose practice had been, up until that point, informed by the imposing mountain peaks that looked down on her previous home, Benvenuto was struck by the endless vistas of Sydney’s landscape.

‘Rhythms of Nature’ is a celebration of the natural world and the beauty that envelops us. Living in Sydney’s Northern Beaches provides constant inspiration from the ocean, cliffs, and bushes that grace my daily life.

My studio in North Head Manly immerses me in nature’s beauty, particularly the interplay of light and shadow reflected on water and foliage. I strive to capture this profound sense of depth and texture in my paintings.

To bring these artworks to life, I surrender control and let my body guide the delicate lines. Engaging with the canvas, I translate the raw energy of the natural world onto each stroke—a dance expressing my deep connection to the environment.

Each painting is a unique exploration of colour, form, and movement. Mirroring the ebb and flow of water, the lines reflect the ocean’s ethereal beauty. A dark blue background symbolizes the depth of nature, while intertwined white, light blue, and gold strokes evoke motion and energy, reminiscent of the sun’s reflection and the harmonious rhythm of the synchronized ocean.

The gold lines delicately contrast against the blue, reminding us of the sun’s radiant reflection. They shift in luminosity, responding to changing light. Black and gold textures emulate nature’s ever-changing textures, enhancing the artwork’s depth and richness.

Together, the reflective nature and evolving textures capture nature’s captivating essence, inviting viewers to immerse themselves in the interplay of light, colour, and texture—a transformative experience that connects us to the beauty that surrounds us.
