“No painting stops in itself, is complete of itself. It is a continuation of previous paintings an is renewed in successive ones.” (Clyfford Still)

Whilst each of my paintings – once complete and released into the world – is its own contained object and has it’s own meaning for, and influence on the view from my perspective as a painter, this quote rings very true for my work practice.

Across the years my work has changed and developed in response to a real immersion into the process of each painting: getting into the creative ‘zone’. Creating a new painting is like going into a new world that is both known and unknown; where prior knowledge, technique, coupled with experimentation, risk and chance, lead me to visual solution for each work.

For me, this process remains somewhat mysterious and includes intuition, curiosity, questioning, openness and response to visual stimuli. As well, the emotional tone of the paintings change as a result of both conscious and unconscious forces at play in me, as well as my interest at the time.

Agneta Ekholm

Finnish born, Australian based artist Agneta Ekholm’s work is by definition abstract and built entirely from imagination and engagement with her technical process. Each painting evolves on the canvas: no working drawings exist. The paintings result from the exploration and discovery inherent in a technique honed over the last 20 years.
