Malcolm Greenwood began his working life as a fitter and machinist before studying mechanical engineering and later completing a business degree in the USA, where he first discovered a passion for clay in 1976. He went on to study and work with renowned Japanese potter Makoto Yabe, and in 1989, he transitioned to working full time as a ceramicist.
Initially focused on the gift and homewares market, Greenwood’s practice evolved in 2008 to meet the rising demand for handmade tableware in fine dining. He now works almost exclusively with leading restaurants and luxury lodges across Australia, including Quay, Bennelong, Firedoor, and the Baillie Lodges portfolio.
His work is defined by its sublime simplicity of form and finish, offering a tactile and visual experience that enhances everyday rituals. The discipline of production informs his exhibition work and vice versa, creating a dynamic exchange between functional design and artistic expression.
With a career spanning over 48 years, Greenwood is also deeply committed to mentoring the next generation of ceramic artists, sharing the skills and insights gained through decades of dedicated practice.
