The mirror works are all based upon Domestic violence – there are three quote works and the Code Three piece. The three quotes are from police officers in response to two recent domestic violence murders of young women, Hannah Baxter and Kelly Wilkinson and a woman called Lyla (not her real name) who has survived multiple suicide attempts due to ongoing DV. All these women had reached out to police multiple times for help and have been dismissed, undermined and belittled. Or worse, accused of being the perpetrators. The abstract quotes Amy uses are an inference to the casual and detached language used from men in power to coerce and undermine women, the ongoing institutional oppression and violence towards women that started with the manufacturing of the idea of witches and the subsequent European and American witch hunts of the 15th and 17th C.These works aim to explore the unforeseen yet recurring violence and misogyny towards women, the ongoing role of male dominated institutional systems of power that are not progressing but rather returning to the dark ages, and to create a direct correlation between the objects and practices of divination and this socially and institutionally entrenched scorn for women.
Code 3 refers to the Queensland response to an incident used for many of the reported cases above – normal response.
