ALISON SMITH | SILENCE OF FACES
.M Contemporary is delighted to present Alison Smith’s debut solo exhibition, ‘Silence of the Faces’. Smith is a Sydney-based artist who has practised art and design for over 20 years and has recently graduated from the National Art School with a Master of Fine Art majoring in figurative Drawing.
This suite of paintings is a collection of faces which continue Smith’s interest in portraiture as a way to connect and empathise with representations of the human condition. Although subtle references to Ancient Roman sculpture appear in the portraits, the processes involved have taken the faces beyond recognition to construct unidentified individuals. The identities are ambiguous, yet each face holds a strong connection with each other, and pushes us to question what it is to be human.
Alison Smith uses portraiture as a vehicle to explore the complexities and ambiguities of the human face. With extensive research into themes of identity and face politics she works from personal experience, mediated images, and directly from life. In this work Alison uses her own experience as an adopted person to investigate and challenge perceptions surrounding the diversity of human experiences of identity.
