‘Meraki’ is the modern Greek word for doing something with so much passion, dedication, soul and love, and by doing so, you leave the essence of yourself in what you’ve created.

These works have come from a particularly difficult and personal time for me. I have been and still currently am going through end stage chronic renal failure in my transplanted kidney, which I was very fortunate to receive 13 years ago. However, with the most recent decline of my health, I have been thrust into a constant state of limbo, one-foot teeters either side of two very big life changing scenarios, edging closer to desperately needing dialysis on one hand and the possibility for a second transplant which we don’t know when will happen on the other.

Being in this grey area with my health has definitely had its ups and downs, however having my art practice has always been a life force for me, especially during those darker days where I need a place to escape my impending reality, even for a few quiet moments, my art has always been that safe sanctuary for me to go, to forget and for me to lose myself in.

Yvette Marie Tziallas

‘A deep fascination with biology, anatomy and the interconnectedness between all living organisms began to develop and has continued to become a key point of exploration in my visual work. My drawing practice is influenced by the way in which large multi-functioning organisms, such as the human body are constructed using a repetition of microscopic cells upon cells. In a similar manner, my intricately drawn patterns are used to echo this natural concept, of building up larger formations using smaller repetitive mark making. Through this drawing process, detailed abstract and foreign topographical landscapes begin to emerge, creating a reimagining of these often mysterious and alien worlds we cannot see unless under a microscope or under medical imaging. A visual improvisation of patterns and formations evolving and weaving around one another takes shape, as if taking the viewer on a dissected journey of a living organism living out its life cycle. Beneath these complex layers of inspiration, at its very core, my work is a constant dissection of self. My practice allows me to create a personal visual dialogue to express the conscious and subconscious facets of my mind and provides a deeply therapeutic and meditative release. The act and experience of drawing and mark making almost allows the world around me in that very moment to sink away, creating a truly intimate space between artist and artwork.’
