Laura E Kennedy

Emerging Artist Laura E. Kennedy creates realistic drawings using coloured pencils and other media on panel. Kennedy has developed a unique approach to using her regularly devalued medium of choice. This process allows her to build up layers of sheer colour using spray lacquer that also protects her surface without the need for glazing. This technique allows her drawings to forge a far closer likeness to the more readily revered medium of oil paintings.

Presently, she is completing a series that utilizes materials most commonly alligned with use in Primary Schools (Chalkboard Paint and Coloured Pencils) to appropriate works by the Dutch Masters. As an avid lover of ornate frames, she has also recently returned to manipulating the standard boundary between artwork and the surrounding picture frame.

Kennedy grew up on the NSW Central Coast and graduated from Sydney College of the Arts in 2008 with a Bachelor of Visual Arts (Printmedia). Although initially her artmaking was irregular as she headed into full-time employment as a picture framer, she has maintained a continuous practice since her relocation to Hobart in early 2013. Since then, she has been selected as a finalist in the Rick Amor Drawing Prize, STILL: The National Still Life Award, the Bay of Fires Art Prize, the City of Hobart Art Prize, the Lethbridge 10000 and the Marie Ellis OAM Prize for Drawing. Kennedy’s work and curation has also been featured in numerous publications and blogs.
