'No use crying over ripped lace – Pride Amplified'

‘No Use Crying Over Ripped Lace’ by Todd Fuller.

In partnership with Sydney WorldPride Pride Amplified 2023 and the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras.

At the core of this exhibition is an animation commissioned by the State Library of New South Wales, alongside a series of drawings. With thanks to Coco Jumbo, Ivy League, Vybe and Ivan Flinn.

In 2017, a post-performance kebab for three Sydney drag stars (Ivy League, Coco Jumbo and Vybe), ended in an altercation as the queens intervened in a gay-bashing. Drag Queens often take on the role of protectors for the LGBTQIA+ community, in this case saving the life of Ivan Finn. Told through the eyes of Coco Jumbo, this body of work marks another moment in history when Drag Queens led the way.

“In 2017, Ivan stood up against homophobic taunts on Oxford St. As a result he was assaulted, before famously being rescued by 3 drag queens in full drag. Unlike many who stay silent after such incidents, Ivan had the courage to speak out publically, strategically generating one of the key narratives of the Same Sex Marriage Plebiscite. His actions across the media illustrated the dangers of empowered homophobia. This exhibition will explore this story.” – Todd Fuller.

Wigs and heels were lost that night, but as Coco says, “there is no use crying over ripped lace”.

This exhibition also features a new series of illustrated ceramic plates, back by popular demand.
