This series of female portraits is a personal reflection on the quiet, persistent grief I have carried through the years of war in Ukraine. Each face is a projection of my inner state, a response to daily news, destruction, loss, and emotional fatigue.
Painting became a form of therapy, a way to process what words could not hold. I didn’t want these works to be frightening or disturbing; instead, I wanted to offer a gentle window into the emotional landscape of someone living through war.
Through soft tones and introspective expressions, I invite the viewer not to look away, but to pause and feel, even briefly, the weight of what continues to unfold, far from sight, on another continent.
Oksana Basarab is a Ukrainian artist currently living and working in Sydney, Australia. She moved in late 2024, bringing with her a deep connection to her homeland and a background shaped by both fine art and illustration.
