Sydney based artist Tom Kusturin is interested in turning painting on its head, subverting conventional applications of material and mediums to expand upon the dialect of abstract painting. Attracted by the notion that distance from authorial decision making short-circuits the compulsion to over aestheticize painting; Kusturin endeavors to force a truth and a tension between the ownership of the mark and the romantic history of gestural abstract painting. Utilizing a de-skilled and bodily process of print making, his practice aims to petrify the sensuality of the hand within expressive abstraction by introducing chance driven procedures that more objectively produce marks following a transfer-like intervention.
